Thermal Weeding Equipment

While all thermal weeding equipment damages weeds through heat, this can be achieved through different means. The equipment discussed below uses one of three methods to attack weeds – fire, steam, and hot foam.

Flame Weeders

Flame weeders dominate the market and are the thermal weeding equipment most easily acquired by the public. These weeders typically use propane as a fuel source. The goal of flame weeding is NOT to catch the plant on fire; rather, the weed should be exposed to the flame only long enough for it to wilt. For more information about flame weeding, please visit the Thermal Weeding page under Pesticide-free Control Options.

Several models of flame weeding equipment are available from multiple companies, but all are basically large blowtorches. As such, great care should be taken during this equipment's operation. In addition, it is highly recommended to have a fire extinguisher and/or source of water readily available such as a bucket of water or garden hose.

Below you will find examples of flame weeder models appropriate for household or commercial use. Please use the provided links to learn more about a specific tool.

The user can save fuel by releasing the squeeze valve between treatment areas. This torch is outfitted with a wire cloth and flame reflector hood, but requires an outside ignition source. The torch can be purchased as a tank backpack kit for an additional cost (please see product page).

Steam Weeders

Steam weeding is another effective method of managing weeds. Unlike flame weeding, steam weeding does not pose a fire risk. In addition, it allows for more precise application of heat and exposure of weeds to superheated conditions.
